Porta potty calculator
Enter your headcount and event length. The calculator applies our planning method in whole units: 1 standard unit per 50 guests for 4 hours, then add-ons for length, alcohol, food and public access. Job sites use the OSHA minimum alongside our 1-per-10-workers recommendation.
How many porta potties do I need for an event?
An event needs 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for up to 4 hours. For events longer than 4 hours, add 1 unit for every 2 base units. When alcohol is served, add 1 unit for every 3 units. A 200-guest, 6-hour party with beer needs 4 + 2 + 2 = 8 units.
| Guests | Up to 4 hrs | 5–8 hrs | 5–8 hrs + alcohol | Hand wash (food) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 1 |
| 200 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 2 |
| 300 | 6 | 9 | 12 | 3 |
| 500 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 5 |
The method, step by step
- Divide guests by 50 and round up. That is the base.
- Longer than 4 hours: add 1 unit for every 2 base units, rounded up.
- Alcohol: add 1 unit for every 3 units so far, rounded up.
- Food: 1 hand wash station per 4 toilets, minimum 1.
- Public event: make 5% of each cluster wheelchair-accessible, minimum 1.
This is the planning method we use on every quote. It is a recommendation, not a legal requirement.
How many porta potties does a job site need?
A job site with 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA Table D-1. From 20 to 199 workers, the minimum is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. We recommend 1 standard unit per 10 workers with weekly service, so a 30-person crew gets 3 units.

How many accessible units does a public event need?
A public event needs at least 5% of portable toilets in each cluster to be wheelchair-accessible, and at least 1, under section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards. A cluster of 10 needs 1. A cluster of 25 needs 2, because 5% of 25 is 1.25, rounded up to 2.
